The language model ChatGPT achieved 100 million active monthly users within just two months, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs predicted that AI could contribute 7% to the global GDP over a 10-year period, which is nearly $7 trillion, but also result in the replacement of 300 million jobs.

However, as AI continues to disrupt every aspect of life and work, it is important to pause and reflect.

Milestones on the Path to Mainstream Adoption

The term “artificial intelligence” was coined by computer scientist John McCarthy in 1955 during a conference proposal. Alongside Alan Turing, Marvin Minsky, and many others, McCarthy is often referred to as one of the pioneers of AI.

Since then, AI has made tremendous progress. It has mastered chess, defeating Russian grandmaster and former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov in 1997. In 2016, Google’s AlphaGo defeated South Korean Go champion Lee Sedol with a score of 4-1. The nine-year gap in these achievements can be attributed to the complexity of Go, which has approximately 10^360 possible moves, far surpassing chess with its comparatively meager 10^123 combinations.

With the advent of DALL-E in 2021 and ChatGPT-4 in early 2023, we find ourselves in the present day, continuing the journey towards a thinking machine.
